Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific Tickets- See O’hara Bring the Magic to Stage
As if great costuming and amazing music weren’t enough of a reason to get Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific tickets, here is another one: Kelli O’Hara. O’Hara’s work with South Pacific has given her a third Tony Award nomination. O’Hara plays Nellie Forbush a self-proclaimed hick from Arkansas and a never-ending optimist. O’Hara’s whole-hearted acceptance of the role has led to recognition and praise. O’Hara loved the role because of the confrontation of racism and her character’s ability to change.
The classic play began its run in 1949. The World War II setting was timely, but it was the deeper themes and original music that kept this show timely for decades. The story revolves around two couples, Nellie, Frenchman Emile de Becque, Marine Lt. Joseph Cable and young local Vietnamese girl name Liat. Nellie originally falls for Emile but has second thoughts when she learns of his two bi-racial children. Joseph also hesitates because of his prejudices. Rodgers and Hammerstein drive home their point about prejudices being taught with songs like “You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught.” The musical taught tolerance years before civil rights movements and make Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific tickets a treasure worth finding. Other hit songs from the play include “Some Enchanted Evening” and “A Wonderful Guy.”
O’Hara started her career on Broadway in 2000 with a role in Jekyll and Hyde. Since then she has performed in both Broadway and off-Broadway productions like Dracula, The Musical and The Light in the Piazza. O’Hara also released her first solo album, which hit stores May 6, 2008. “Wonder in the World” is an eclectic album with songs by her husband Greg Naughton and Harry Connick Jr. as well as a song from The Light in the Piazza. Connick also accompanies O’Hara on the piano on all but two of the tracks. Along with her music and stage performances, O’Hara has also had roles in TV and film including an appearance on NUMB3RS on CBS.
O’Hara seems to slip seamlessly into any role she accepts. This last year, she played the famous Eliza Doolittle in the New York Philharmonic production of My Fair Lady. Her other Tony nominations were for her roles in The Light in the Piazza and The Pajama Game. Her talent is easily seen in her latest endeavor, South Pacific. Don’t miss another of O’Hara’s award-worthy performances and get a pair of tickets to Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific today!
